Newborn Photos

Newborn Photos

When my first son was born we hired a photographer to take some family style newborn photos. She did a really great job and we were so happy with the result. When our second son was born we had already invested in a nice camera so we decided to do similar photos on our own. We are so happy with how these turned out and I wanted to share them, even though my baby is now definitely not a newborn anymore.

Taking our own newborn photos was a lot more work than it might seem. There's a lot of prep work involved in taking a good photo. Not only do you need to know how to use your camera, you need to figure out where and when to take the photos, when the lighting is the best, what backdrop you'll use, and who will actually take the photos. My husband and my mom took ours after I set the camera for them. A remote would be awesome I just haven't taken the time to set mine up yet.

Whenever I'm taking photos like this I think it's really important to have a vision. I usually use Pinterest to save photo ideas I'd like to replicate. We referred to my pinboard a few times during this shoot. I keep my child photo ideas here and my family photo ideas here.

When we were trying to get our older son to be in the pictures and to actually smile and do what we asked, my husband used fruit snacks to bribe him. Lifesaver. I've heard mini marshmallows are also good because they don't transfer color.

By the end our older son was having so much fun that he was being spontaneous and candid, jumping on the bed having a good ole time. Those are some of my favorite photos of the whole bunch. It's work to photograph kids, but they make it so worth it.

We were really realistic in our expectations for these photos. I think that's one reason I like them so much. Also the people in the photos happen to be my favorite, so that helps too.
